(203) 226-6983. Connecticut's first state park is still one of its finest. Have a leisurely lunch in the shade of the picnic grove, swim in Long Island sound, or view marsh life from the observation platform at Sherwood Island. This 238-acre park combines beach frontage and wooded picnic sites. 9/11 Living Memorial located on Sherwood Point has a view of the Manhattan skyline where the towers once stood. Picnicking, bathrooms, showers, concession, surf chairs, field sports, swimming, saltwater fishing, interpretive program, bird watching and nature center & trail. Nature Center Wed.-Sun. 10 - 4 pm. Charge: Memorial Day – Labor Day and weekends mid April – mid Sept.

Short Beach Park

Short Beach Park has many amenities including a par-3 golf course, miniature golf, platform tennis, basketball courts, beach volleyball, playground, swimming, trails, birding and wildlife, food concession and restrooms.  Parts of the site offering views of the water are wheelchair accessible. There are three summer residents of Short Beach worthy of special mention. The first two, the piping plover and the least tern, are ground nesting birds that require beach front property and seclusion to successfully reproduce. The ancestors of the third resident, the horseshoe crab, date back 300 million years. This harmless creature feeds in the inter-tidal zone and uses the beach to dig its shallow nest during extreme high tides. Stewart B. McKinney National Wildlife Refuge

Sheffield Island, Norwalk, CT

Trail explores the history of the island and the importance of island habitats. A tour of the island's historic lighthouse, owned and managed by Norwalk Seaport Association, is available to visitors. Weed Beach

This 22-acre park includes a large sandy beach, picnic areas, bathhouse, concession stand, children's play areas, 6 tennis courts, 5 paddle tennis courts, a fit trail with equipment,boating, fishing, swimming, and a windsurfing area.
