Winter Creature Cruises at Maritime Aquarium

Many weekends through mid-March 2013. Dates and times vary by low tide. Journey out onto Long Island Sound in hopes of seeing some of the seals that spend the winter just off our shores during The Maritime Aquarium's new season of Winter Creature Cruises. These invigorating cruises seek out the harbor seals, gray seals and even harp seals that have been coming down into the Sound in growing numbers each winter. Educators on board the research vessel Oceanic will point out these federally protected marine mammals and talk about their natural histories. They'll also help identify such winter waterfowl as buffleheads, mergansers and Old Squaws.

The Stepping Stones Museum exhibit: Framed: Step Into Art will run from January 21, 2013 to May 12th.  One of the unique exhibits to be enjoyed at Stepping Stones.   A chance for children to interact with paintings, with fun activities like climbing into a tent and exploring the camping gear in John Singer Sargent's Camp at Lake O'Hara, adding corn husks to the flower tower in Diego Rivera's Corn Festival or substituting their own smiles in a cut-out of the Mona Lisa.  The exhibit, produced by the Minnesota Children's Museum is a must see.  Check the website for further information.

Our Framed: Step into Art™ exhibit is scheduled to run from Monday, January 21 – Sunday, May 12, 2013
Enter the framework of famous paintings and experience art like never before.  Art viewers become art as they physically enter a scene and are encouraged to interpret, express and connect with art.  They can ride a giant chicken attached to a wagon, set up a camp in the Canadian Rockies, prepare dinner for a group of hungry farmers.  They can become an art gallery director, selecting and exhibiting art in their own gallery, as well as explore the exhibit through Art Hunt Cards.  Framed: Step into Art ™ supports the National Standards for Art Education. Framed: Step into Art ™ was produced by the Minnesota Children's Museum for the members of the Youth Museum Exhibit Collaborative.

The State Historic Preservation Office of the Department of Economic and Community Development has awarded a $179,558.00 planning grant to the Lockwood-Mathews Mansion Museum to move forward with ADA improvements and a new basement stair egress. The State Historic Preservation Office Historic Restoration Fund most generously provides the funding that permits the Museum to be wholly accessible to the public allowing for the expansion of the visitor groups and programming of the Museum’s full facility. … all sixty-two rooms!
