Hands on History Monroe Historical Society

Dates for Hands on History this year are June 27 - July 1.  The regular session this year will be June 27 - 30, Monday through Thursday from 9:30 - 1:30.  The optional day will be Friday, July 1. Monday through Wednesday meet at the Beardsley House on Great Ring Road where the children will have an opportunity to try their hands at a variety of colonial activities and crafts.  Thursday we will meet at the Meetinghouse on the corner of Barn Hill Road and East Village Road and walk to the colonial-era East Village Cemetery.  The optional day, Friday, we will meet at the 1790 Schoolhouse on Wheeler Road and walk to the History Room of the Edith Wheeler Memorial Library and also visit the David Merrill Mural on the ground floor of the library. Children will bring a bag lunch.  Snacks and drinks will be provided. Fees:  Mon - Thurs:  Members $80, Non-members $100. Optional day Fri: Members $20, Non-members $25 Fees for siblings:  Mon - Thurs, Members $70, Non-members $90 Optional day Fri:  Members $10, Non-members, $20.

Learn how to fold animals, birds, and even Pikachu! Materials will be provided; donation to benefit the earthquake and tsunami victims of Japan. The workshop leaders will be wearing Yukatas (summer kimonos) while teaching  origami (ori -fold, gami-paper), a craft that Japanese children learn from an early age.

With Long Island Sound as a backdrop, area residents can enjoy free musical entertainment for all ages throughout the summer. Just pack a picnic and comfortable seating then head for Calf Pasture Beach in Norwalk for the First County Bank Summer Concert Series. This year, tribute bands will be featured during the weekly concerts on Wednesday evenings (rain date is the following night). A $5.00 parking fee is charged for cars without a Norwalk beach sticker.  A classic car show begins at 6:00 p.m. Show includes magic, juggling, comedy, audience participation and the production of a live rabbit. Shady Beach 4:00 p.m.    Dance to the Music with DJ Nuzzo 6:00 p.m.    Beau Badrik, a teen rock/pop/indie artist, is a multi- instrumentalist, singer, songwriter and composer who sites Billy Joel as his major influence. "Dreaming Still," Badrik's debut CD, was released in February. His live performances are backed by a five-piece band that includes four male and one female musicians ages 15-20, to deliver his driving rock guitar rhythms and catchy hooks. 7:00 p.m.    Dance to the Music with DJ Nuzzo 8:00 p.m. Big Shot (Billy Joel tribute) -- Fronted by the vocals of singer/songwriter and piano man, Michael DelGuidice, the band is comprised of professional musicians who have toured with Billy Joel and also have worked with Michael Bolton, Hall and Oats, Huey Lewis, Diana Ross, Billy Joel's Broadway Musical, Richie Blackmore, Tower of Power, Nine Days and Trans Siberian Orchestra. Big Show features special guest saxophonist Richie Cannata, a member of the original Billy Joel Band from 1972 - 1982 who returned for Billy Joel's 2006 tour.

Mayor Moccia will cut the ribbon on the main library’s new night at 4:00 pm, followed by Infinite Roots, an African Drum group. At 6:00 pm, we will hear from Goldrush, a cutting edge acoustic country band that exemplifies today’s hottest country sound- - an energetic blend of country and bluegrass energy. Goldrush provides exciting entertainment both in sight and sound. Its music is a mix of original songs, as well as many classic country songs. Between 6 - 8 pm, library visitors can line up for Henna, an ancient body art, by Manju. Manju began doing henna art as a hobby, impressed by its artistic nature.  Refreshments will be served throughout the evening, and library staff will be demonstrating some of our new databases. Summer concerts, other programs and refreshments are also sponsored by The Friends of the Norwalk Public Library System.
