Special Exhibit Meerkats and Africa: From the Desert to the Sea at The Maritime Aquarium

The exhibit features six sibling meerkats – three males, three females – born in the Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Their exhibit offers the meerkats lots of opportunities for climbing, digging and exploring, with several feeding locations to keep them always on the alert for incoming crickets. And a viewing bubble lets visitors pop up right among the meerkats. Africa from Desert to Sea let's visitors explore the aquatic wonders of Africa and discover how the continent's fish – though much different from those in Long Island Sound – face similar environmental challenges.

The Discovery Museum features an art exhibit-- HORIZONS-Paintings and Monotypes by MISSY SAVARD July 31, 2011- January 11, 2012. Gallery Hours:Tuesday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Savard's works portray architectural studies and landscapes painted from locations around New England and along the eastern seaboard. Through figurative work runs a consistent theme in which Savard, displaying a sure sense of light and strong graphic understanding, captures a quality of serenity unique to her work. Savard has exhibited at art centers throughout the U.S. and has been honored with many coveted awards for her paintings. She is an active member of the Silvermine Guild of Artists and The New Haven Paint and Clay Club. Nancy Duncan Hall, curator of The Bruce Museum in Greenwich, CT has called Savard's work "beautifully painted and of strong emotional appeal". Her work has also been described as "reminiscent of Whistler- with excellent use of color and textures" by Paul Rathbone, director of American Paintings at Sotheby's New York.

Greenwich Historical Society Presents Everyday Heroes--Green First Responders

Colonial Club At The New Canaan Historical Society

Thursdays,4:00-5:30PM. Step back in time and gain a comprehensive view of colonial autumns in Connecticut. Besides incorporating colonial history and lore, these sessions will include crafts, skills, games, and an (often homemade) snack. The cost for 10 sessions is $235 for members or $255 for non-members. Individual sessions: $35 members/$40 non-members. School Days: As students start school again, let them explore the differences between our typical school day and one that might have been held in a one-room schoolhouse centuries ago. Autumn Foods and Traditions: As the trees start to turn, children will experience some of the colonist's fall activities. Preparing for Winter: The winter months were hard for the colonists – during these sessions children will discover how colonial families prepared for New England winters. Activities will include: Colonial lessons in our own Rock School and Little Red School House; Making and using hornbooks, Visits to the Historical Society's garden, Cooking with the same foods and ingredients used long ago,  Comparing holidays and traditions, then and now and  Preserving and drying foods.
