Wilton Farmer's Baseball Team Workshop for Kids

11 - 12:30 pm. Making Baseball Cards! Founded in 1921, the Wilton Farmers baseball team quickly became one of the most popular attractions in town. Crowds could reach up to 1,000 people, or roughly half the population of Wilton at the time! Museum Educator Lola Chen and exhibition curator Nick Foster will walk the kids through the current exhibition "Farm Team: 50 Years of Wilton Baseball" which traces the story of Wilton's quintessential small town baseball team. The workshop project will be extra fun - the kids will dress up in baseball gear, and make their own baseball card. Snack included, which the children will help prepare.

1 pm - 3:30 pm. Study marine biodiversity from the water's surface down to the bottom for a first-hand understanding of Long Island Sound's interdependent marine life. Participants utilize such sampling techniques as a plankton tow, biodredge, mud grab and otter trawl that may bring up fish, crabs, lobsters, sea stars and more. A video microscope and touch tank on board enhance observations.

10 am - 4 pm. Start painting expressively to create a plate with a wide range of tonal washes and velvety black passages using batches of gritty glue made by adding carborundum to liquid gel medium. Dig in with a dry point needle and start scraping the plate with a razor or steel wool to get all the marks imaginable, and then print with a traditional intaglio hand wiping method. Kate will demonstrate how to take this matrix and ink it in a variety of ways to fully realize your imagery using, color, glazes, viscosity printing and more. Demonstrations and personalized critiques will add to the collegial and supportive atmosphere throughout the weekend.
