Outdoor Adventures: Slimy, Scaly, Creepy, Crawly

Get into the Halloween spirit by meeting some super slimy, scaly, and crawly critters! We'll discover if animals such as snakes, spiders, toads, and cockroaches are truly creepy and icky, or if they just look different! Meet some of our live teaching animals up close, touch Connecticut's longest snake, and even hold one of our tarantulas, if you dare! We'll end our evening adventure with a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach race, where the winner will take home a fun prize! Limited enrollment. Recommended for ages 5 and up. Start by enjoying a presentation on Fall Constellations, followed by a visit to view the night sky through our 22-inch research telescope. The presentation portion of the program will be held rain or shine. Viewing hours are weather permitting. Please call 203-977-6537 for weather updates in regards to telescope viewing. This program is suitable for ages 5 and over. Location: Behind the Heckscher Farm, enter from Scofieldtown Road. GPS users enter - 151 Scofieldtown Road. 8:45 a.m. A fall foliage walk over a short segment of the Paugussett Trail has been combined with a peek back at the historical intrigue of Monroe's East Village, creating a family-oriented outing Oct. 29, the Saturday morning before Halloween. The outing runs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. rain or shine and is open to the public without charge, bus transportation included. Space is limited so reservations are required. Register at www.monroerec.org. Outing runs 9 am - 11 am. The tour then returns by bus to the Meeting House for apple cider and informal conversation intended to generate interest in Monroe's past and allow participants to share their family heritage and experiences with life in the community as it once was, their own brushes with history.
