CT Trails Day - Westport - Paddle


Sherwood Island State Park, Westport, CT

9:30 - 12:30. Join us for a morning paddle as we explore the Sherwood Island shoreline. The event begins with a safety check & demonstration on the beach for life vest fit, seaworthy vessel, emergency gear (whistle or horn required). Then we'll paddle the length of the island shoreline, west to the entrance of the Mill Pond and east past the Park boundary to Frost Point. We'll ride the rising tide into the salt marsh behind the Park (high tide is at 11:21), then return to our launch point on the open beach. Your guide will point out birds along the way, and show you how to safely exit and enter your kayak from deep water just off the beach. Optional: waterproof binoculars. CT Trails Day - Westport Sherwood Island State Park

10:45am - 3:00pm. The Wonder of Flight-from Birds to Drones. At the Nature Center in the morning, demonstrations supported by computer simulation will be led by Don Lord, a private, instrument rated pilot and radio controlled enthusiast for over 50 years. As well as numerous static models, there will be an opportunity for "flying" a plane or drone on the simulator provided. In the afternoon, demonstrations of gliders, acrobatic planes, helicopters and drones will be conducted from the flying field-just a short walk from the Nature Center. Adults & children will have the opportunity to try their hand at actually flying a radio controlled model. Pre-registration strongly encouraged to ensure adequate availability of simulators. In the event of rain, morning session continues, but afternoon session beginning at Noon will be cancelled. 10:45 - Noon at Nature Center. Ask at the Park gate, turn left at East Beach, parking lot is adjacent to Nature Center. Pm, Walk to Model Flying Site.

CT Trails Day -Weston Devil's Den Nature Preserve


26 Pent Rd, Weston, CT

11 am - 2 pm. Devil's Den is a 1,756 acre preserve owned by The Nature Conservancy. It consists of 20 miles of trails with beautiful wildflowers and birds throughout. Our hike will take us along the Laurel and Godfrey trails and pass by Godfrey Pond, beautiful forested areas and the remnants of an old saw mill.

9 am - 12:30 pm. Moderately paced 6.6 mi. hike from Davis Hill Rd. trailhead to Redding town line and back. CT Trails Day - Weston - Katharine Ordway Preserve


165 Goodhill Rd, Weston, CT

9 am - 11. Enjoy a 2-3 mile hike with local hiking enthusiasts and staff of The Nature Conservancy in Katharine Ordway Preserve, one of Weston's lesser known treasures. Bring water and wear clothes and footwear appropriate for the weather and hiking. Dogs are not permitted on the preserve. We will visit the arboretum and other favorite spots on this former estate of philanthropist and conservationist, Katharine Ordway. There will be some uneven terrain and small, steep inclines, but otherwise an easy hike. Meeting Place: Meet at the parking lot for The Nature Conservancy's Katharine Ordway Preserve:165 Goodhill Rd, Weston, CT. We will begin promptly at 9:00.

CT Trails Day - Trumbull Old Mine Park


Old Mine Rd., Trumbull, CT

10 am - 1 pm. A moderate hike to see natural formations and historic remnants of old abandoned mines. We will learn about the local geology by exploring mining excavation areas. We will learn about the history of the park including old mining and recreational activities. We will learn about the natural world by studying native plants and animals and exploring ridges, valleys, rivers and streams. We will clean up trash and do minor trail maintenance as well. Meeting Place: Old Mine Park Parking Lot. 

CT Trails Day -Stamford - Mianus River Park/Indian Rock Trail


Merriebrook Lane, Stamford, CT

8:45 am - 12 noon. Join the Friends of Mianus River Park & the Fairfield County Chapter of NEMBA for our annual National Trails Day project. This year we'll be working on re-aligning an old fall line trail. The event will involve some replanting of ferns and shrubbery, rock armoring, and building several sections of new trail while closing and remediating the old social/fall line trail. While Tools, Donuts, Coffee, Water and Lunch will be provided we ask volunteers to bring sturdy shoes/boots and work gloves. Meet at the Stone Bridge on Merriebrook Lane in Stamford, CT (below the Red Barn)

CT Trails Day -Shelton - Paugussett and Birchbank Trails


Shelton, CT

10:30 am and 2 pm. Come and enjoy some of the more remote Shelton hiking opportunities at Birchbank Mountain and Indian Well State Park. This 4-mile moderately difficult hike will begin on Birchbank Trail and climb the Housatonic River bank along the falls and pools of Upper White Hills Brook, pass the fireplace remains of an old gun club, then climb to a seasonal overlook of the Housatonic River. Hikers will then follow the Paugussett Trail as it passes through the Housatonic riverbank forest for some of the most remote hiking in Shelton. The hike ends with a good overlook of the river and a steep descent to the scenic falls at Indian Well State Park. Cars will be spotted at the the falls parking area for the return trip. Be sure to bring plenty of water and wear appropriate footwear for uneven footing and possible mud. Meeting Place: Birchbank Mountain Trailhead, located at the Indian Well Road RR crossing, 1.9 miles north of Rt. 110. Ample roadside parking across the tracks.

CT Trails Day Nicholdale Shelton Conservation Land Trust Property

10 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Lovely hike over moderate terrain for approximately 5 miles. Suitable for able bodied hiking children, adults and leashed dogs. Several opportunities to shorten by returning to parking nearby. Additional loop will be also be offered. Plenty of water and suitable footwear are a must. Meeting Place: Nicholdale Farms South side of rte.110, West of Indian Well State Park; one mile East of Monroe Town Line

CT Trails Day - Norwalk - Trail Maintenance


Norwalk, CT

8:30 am - 3 pm. Join the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Norwalk Seaport Association for a volunteer day to clean and rehabilitate the Sheffield Island nature trail. Volunteers will take a FREE ferry ride to Sheffield Island and help pull invasive plants, perform light maintenance work, and help get the trail ready for the summer season. Bring a picnic lunch and dine on the grass with a view of the Long Island Sound. A tour of Sheffield Island's historic lighthouse, cruise on Norwalk harbor, and time to enjoy the island will be included. This volunteer event is open to adults and children 9 and older (must be accompanied by an adult). Space is limited and pre-registration is REQUIRED. More event details will be provided to volunteers after registration. Meeting Place: Information on where to meet will be provided after registration.
