CFPA Ramble: Limestone Kilns, Marble Caves and Old Mining Roads

9 am - 11:30 am. Join us for a geological and nature adventure as we hike through a unique ridge-top ecosystem dominated by chestnut oak, pitch pine and mountain laurel. Follow along old mining roads that lead to the ruins of an early 1800's colonial limestone kiln. Investigate the marble caves and quarries as well as large rock ledges (most likely used by Native Americans for shelter). Enjoy dramatic overlooks of the Housatonic River while enjoying snacks. Observe evidence of primary succession where reindeer lichens, mosses, grasses, lowbush blueberry, and oaks all grow. This free 2.5-mile hike is geared for families with school-age children (age six and older), as well as singles. The trails are easy to moderate with some steeper hills. Children and adults should be of sufficient fitness to hike the planned distance. No dogs, please.
