10:30 a.m. The Museum presents a series of hands on workshops for students in grades 1 – 3, who will explore the original art work in the exhibition Let It Snow: Children’s Book Art and then create their own winter illustrations using a variety of techniques. Tuesday: 3-D Winter Scene Collage Wednesday: Painting Winter Landscapes Thursday: Multi-color Scratchboard Printmaking Friday: Silk-Screen Printing Each workshop is a complete program, but the four projects are complementary. Victorian Valentine's Day Tea for Children At The New Canaan Historical Society Town House - Children ages 6 – 11 are invited to join us for tea at The New Canaan Historical Society on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 from 4:00 – 5:30 p.m. Afternoon tea and treats will be prepared and enjoyed by the children.  The participants will make a special Valentine's Day craft to bring home. 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Botanical Opera features five of the greatest operas in the repertory: Puccini’s La Boehme; Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera; Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier; Mozart’s Cosi fan tutte; and Wagner’s Gotterdamerung. There are fascinating botanical references in each of these works. We will consider, via DVD, one aria or excerpt from each of the operas.

1:00 - 2:00 p.m. Conifers and Cones: Do all conifers keep their needles throughout the winter time? Why is conifer sap so sticky? What is the tallest species of conifer in Connecticut? Why are there so many different shapes and sizes of cones? Participants will meet a variety of coniferous species growing on the Arboretum’s property and take a closer look at different types of needles under microscopes. We will also learn how to measure trees from the ground and look for the tallest conifer at the Arboretum. The winter homeschool series will be a six week series that will meet on Thursdays in January, February and March from 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm. Ages 5-11 are welcome to attend. Parents can stay for the program or drop off their children for the hour. Each class will consist of indoor and outdoor time; parents should plan for their children to spend some time outside in winter weather and should dress appropriately.
