Spring on the Farm Festival Weekend--Saturday, May 14 & Sunday, May 15, 2016 from  11 am to 3 pm. Join us for this fun family weekend on the farm! Meet the latest additions to our Heckscher Farm family at Spring on the Farm. Watch as our flock of sheep gets its annual shearing and learn about what happens with their woolly coats. See firsthand how to turn wool into felt or yarn, plus a variety of other hands-on demonstrations. There will be activities for all ages including face painting, crafts, colonial reenactments, live music with Jay and Ray, and a plant and herb sale. Weir Farm National Historic Site is offering a free, two-day Spring Impressionist Painting Workshop on Saturday and Sunday, May 14 and May 15 from 10am to 4pm. The workshop is designed for beginning art students and artists interested in learning about the science and poetry of Impressionist landscape painting. Registration is free, but space is limited to twelve artists, so please call early to secure a spot! To register or for more information, please call 203-834-1896 ext. 12. Participants must have a basic understanding of their selected art form and be able to handle their own equipment for plein air fieldwork, as well as for the studio workshop environment. May 14-15, 2016--ENCAUSTIC COLLAGRAPH with Binnie Birstein--Saturday - Sunday, 10am-4pm. 2-day intensive workshop, limited to 8. This workshop combines encaustic painting with printmaking by creating collagraph plates that use wax to make the printable surface. Participants will be able to experiment with inlaying and incising techniques to create texture and build their images on re-useable Plexi-glass plates. The plates can then be inked with water-based Akua intaglio ink and printed on a printing press. The possibilities of using encaustic to create texture for printmaking are limitless, and producing a printable plate with encaustic generates an exciting visual and artistic journey. All Levels.

New Canaan Historical Society Hosts Modern House Day Tour & Symposium

 “Modern House Day Tour + Symposium, Modern: A Way of Thinking”--Saturday May 14, 2016 from 8:30 am to 7:00 pm. The New Canaan Historical Society’s biennial Modern House Day Tour + Symposium continues this year with “Modern: A Way of Thinking.”  Check-in begins at Grace Farms at 8:30 am with a continental breakfast, followed by the symposium beginning at 9:45 am.   Speakers include Hicks Stone, architect, author, and son of Edward Durell Stone; Bill Ryall, FAIA, LEED, PHIUS, and partner at Ryall, Porter, Sheridan; and Sharon Prince, President of Grace Farms. The symposium will be moderated by Bob Gregson, artist, photographer, and former Creative Director of the State of Connecticut Office of Culture & Tourism.   After the symposium has ended, box lunches will be served.  The Modern House Tour will then commence via private vans. The homes included on the tour were designed by Eliot Noyes, Alan Goldberg, John Black Lee, and Philip Johnson.  The homes have been updated by Toshiko Mori, Joeb Moore, Amanda Martocchio, and Kengo Kuma.  There will also be a guided tour of Grace Farms designed by SANAA architects.  The day will conclude with a cocktail party back at Grace Farms.There are two levels of admission: The $275 level includes breakfast and the symposium. The $500 level includes breakfast, symposium, box lunch, house tour, and cocktail party.
Tickets are tax-deductible to the full extent of the law. Tickets will not be distributed.  With purchase a reservation is made in your name. Check in begins at    8:30 am at Grace Farms.
