4:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.  From mayflies to salamanders, there is a great world beneath the rocks and leaves of the stream. Join us for a chance to explore Poorhouse Brook for the amphibians, macroinvertebrates and fish that call it home. We'll walk a few different parts of the stream to see what we can find. Please be prepared to walk in the stream; water shoes are recommended. This series of family programs is led by local naturalists from Animal Embassy and the Stamford Museum & Nature Center. 08:30 AM - Noon Instructor: Dr. Neil Hendrickson, Bartlett Tree Company Neil Hendrickson is a Ph.D in Forestry & is the Northeast Technical Researcher for Bartlett Tree. Classroom session will review the process used for risk assessment and discuss the terms used to describe risk categorization, targets, likelihood of failure and the consequences of failure. A two-page tool using matrixes (Basic Tree Risk Assessment Form) will be reviewed and examples shown on how tree risk is assessed and conclusion is reached. Examples of defective trees and tree parts will be shown and participants will use the matrixes to rate the examples. This exercise will be done in small groups and one member will present the group's findings. The group will go outdoors and assess two different trees independently using the same tools. Discussion surrounding the tree's condition will take place while performing the Risk Assessment. The last ½ hour will be back in the classroom to review the assessments of the live trees. On Tuesday 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Our specific goal is to discuss GIS (Global Information Systems) and how we will use the Trimble GPS (Global Positioning Systems) to plot trees and other valuable plants in the landscape.. A demonstration of inputting data into the ArborScope program will show how the field data is formatted after collection and integrated into a web hosted program. Outdoor class time will allow for a demonstration of the Trimble unit and the opportunity for hands on use. Tree Risk Assessment class held on September 23rd is a requirement for this class.
